The awesome power of rain

Let's say it rains and you get 2". Not unusual (at least for FL), not that much water, right? Well, actually each 10'x3' area of your roof, garden or pasture will get about 132 gal of rain.

Now, let's say you got these 2" in 40 minutes (actually happened here last summer). Each of these relatively small areas will be getting 3.3 g/minute.

Just needed to write this somewhere, so I don't forget :)

1.7"

All green things are extremely happy and rye grass and other "weeds" are popping up everywhere making us very happy too :)

Thanks! I'm actually subscribed to this blog (for a few years already) but didn't see this post yet. She's right - dog kennels are much sturdier than cheapo greenhouses. And you actually can build the frame from the same tubes and joints (available in Lowe's and HD) even cheaper. Add a set of anchors from Sam's (~ $30. I think) and that sucker ain't going nowhere unless there is a major hurricane :) Sounds like a good project ... well, I'm still not sure if it worth all the trouble but if it is, it can be done pretty easy it seems...

Just curious, have you been reading her for a while?

Leon,

Came across your blog (and this post) via Alan at Robert's Roost. Rainwater collection was actually the origin of my writing, a couple of years back - when we built a system to collect, store and sanitize rainwater for everything, including drinking water. One inch of rain provides is with 1K gallons, and we can store 5K. I've learned a lot; happy to share.

I'll poke around your site as time permits.

Thanks.

Hi Jack (?)

The timing couldn't be better - this summer we'll concentrate on conquering the rain :) Thanks for your offer and I'm sure I'll take you up on that in a month or so. Will study your site first, of course.

Excellent point! I've been thinking about putting a rainbarrel by our 8x12' greenhouse to catch water for the garden. I had no idea there was THAT much in one little area!! I'm just into Georgia, East of I75, so we probably get around the same amount of rainfall :)

He he, can you guess why I decided to actually do this math?

That's right - I hooked two 55 gal. barrels to downspouts and watched in awe how they overflowed after 10 minutes or so of pretty light drizzle :))

Always do your math first :)
